About Our Misson

We are neighbors who have lived in the area for over 30 years and until recently have not been actively engaged in our local government processes and decisions, having confidence in the visions and objectives expressed by our elected and appointed officials.

We believed that because of the Town’s participation in the Hudson River Greenway, the work of the area’s community organizations, and the Town’s published Comprehensive Plan were heading in the right direction, and generally trusted that everyone was on the same page in wanting to continue to improve the quality of life for our residents, which include clean air, clean water, preservation of natural resources and open space for resident recreation and relaxation while enabling local business owners in a supportive environment.

Our trust was shattered in the spring of 2021 when we began to understand the lengths our town officials have gone to enable the development of a gas station which will effectively destroy the center of Hughsonville. As part of this process, the homes and businesses of Hughsonville were derided,  public comments were not taken seriously and project opposition was characterized as “politically motivated”.  As we looked around Dutchess County, we realized how special the hamlet of Hughsonville is, and if we don’t protect it, we can easily become a hamlet in name only like so many (think of Red Oaks Mill).

We have come to realize that the designations such as “Greenway Community” and “Historic District” have become empty public relations gambits that are shielding bad decisions and that we, as residents, need to actively work to protect and improve our quality of life.  The formation of the not-for-profit group is dedicated to raising awareness of the substantial contributions the Hughsonville Hamlet and Wheeler Hill communities have made historically and will continue to make as we move into a healthy, sustainable and prosperous future.
